3-Minute Theory: You’re Not One Version of You
Most people think therapy is about getting answers.
Matt flips that idea completely.
A therapist isn’t there to tell you who you are, they’re there to help you notice yourself clearly enough to figure it out.
Because the biggest conversations in your life rarely happen out loud.
They happen inside your head first.
MIND – Think
“The clients are the experts in themselves.”
One of the biggest misconceptions about therapy is that the therapist is the authority.
Matt says the opposite.
The therapist doesn’t fix you. They create a space where you start seeing your own patterns, the beliefs you repeat, the things you avoid saying, the stories you tell yourself.
And here’s the uncomfortable part:
Most communication doesn’t happen with other people first.
It happens internally.
If you’ve never had the honest conversation with yourself, you’ll struggle to have it with anyone else.
BODY – Do
“Your inner dialogue isn’t just language — it shows up physically.”
Matt suggests starting with curiosity, not control.
For one day, just observe your inner dialogue.
Ask yourself:
What does my mind repeat most?
When does it get loud? (before sleep, after scrolling, during stress?)
What happens in my body when it does?
If you ignore that inner voice long enough, it won’t disappear.
It starts showing up as restlessness, poor sleep, distraction, or the urge to numb out.
Awareness is the first step in learning how to respond to it instead of being dragged around by it.
HEART – Feel
“Shame is ‘I am bad.’ Guilt is ‘I did something bad.’”
The episode also touched on why so many young men struggle.
Not because they’re weak, but because the environment around them constantly feeds comparison and isolation.
Social media, for example, shows endless versions of people who appear more successful, stronger, richer, happier.
And over time that comparison quietly turns into shame.
The belief that something about you is fundamentally wrong.
Therapy isn’t about erasing your past or fixing everything overnight.
It’s about learning how to live in your own skin without constantly fighting yourself.
A Piece of Us
Konrad: “Last Sunday I packed a bag with some snacks and water and drove to the Peak District for a walk.
Recently I’ve been feeling a bit overwhelmed with everything, the podcast, personal life, training, work. I know that’s part of being human, and in many ways it’s a privilege. It means things are moving forward.
Last year I started scheduling small solo getaways that I call “Solitude Days.” I pack a few things and go for a long walk somewhere in nature. Ideally the whole day.
This time it was just half a day, but it was amazing.
I chose one of my favourite hikes in Kinder Scout and just walked and thought. No phone. No distractions. Just me and my own head.
By the time I finished the hike I felt fresh again. Clearer. Lighter. Ready to go.
My mind felt calmer and the stress that had been building up suddenly seemed manageable.
If life ever feels like it’s doing too much, I highly recommend this:
go for a long walk somewhere in nature. No phone. No distractions. Just you and your thoughts.
Honestly, one of the best mental resets there is.
Onto the next one, probably in April.”
